UF/IFAS Range Science Program

Range Science GIS and Remote Sensing Lab

Mission Statement
Facilities

The Range Science GIS program works in conjuction with the SWFREC GIS facility. Facilities are located at the Southwest Florida Research & Education Center (SWFREC) in Immokalee, Florida. A Dual Pentium 300MHz GIS NT server is the backbone of most of the applications as well as a Pentium Pro 200MHz NT workstation. The SWFREC has a SUN Sparc 20 which is used. GIS software is based on ESRI's ARC/INFO and ArcView. Global positioning work is accomplished with a Trimble Pro XR Real-time differential correction GPS receiver. Plotting is provided by the SWFREC HP 650C Designjet plotter.

Projects
  • SWFREC GIS Land Management System
  • Distribution mapping of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) in Florida
  • Remote sensing of invasive exotic weeds on Lee County Conservation lands
  • Tropical soda apple distribution ecology model on a southwest Florida ranch
  • GPS animal location system for studying grazing & water quality
  • Analysis of distribution and home range of coyotes with GPS and GIS
  • Diagnostic Evaluation of Low Yielding Sand-Land Sugar Cane Areas using GPS & GIS
