  • Merniece Johnson is presented with the 2009 UF/IFAS Superior Accomplishment Award by Dr. Larry Arrington, Interim Senior Vice President of IFAS and Dr. Millie Ferrer, Interim Dean for Extension.  This award is presently yearly to employees who have exemplary performance and who go above and beyond to support the mission of their unit.  The WFREC is very proud of Merniece and of this award.   • Dr. Kimberly Bohn -Dr. Bohn is the recipient of the 2009 WFREC Faculty of Year Award as voted on by the UF Milton students.  Dr. Bohn is presented the award by Dr. Barry Brecke, Associate Center Director of the WFREC.  Dr. Bohn teaches forestry courses in support of the Natural Resource Conservation  major at the UF Milton Campus.  Congratulations Dr. Bohn for your outstanding achievement as the WFREC Faculty of Year.
  • Dr. Thetford - recognized by one of the horticulture leaders in Florida for his presentation during the 2008 Southern Region Meeting of the International Plant Propagators Society meeting in Charlottesville, VA.
  • Dr. Debbie Miller - author on two papers titled "Impact of increased hurricane activity on beach mouse habitat and habitat occupancy" and "Barrier island features influence dune habitat loss from frequent hurricanes along the Northwest Florida coast". Both papers will be presented during The Wildlife Society meetings.
  • Yeager, Tom., Gary Knox, and Sonali Padhye. 2008. "Production Strategies for Water Savings in the Landscape". $5000. FNGLA.
  • Three proposals from the WFREC faculty were chosen for funding as part of the WFREC Research Grant program. This grant program was established by a private donor who wanted to financially support research at the WFREC. A total of $10,000 was awarded to the following faculty:

    Dr. Bohn - Evaluating the use of prescribed fire in conjunction with herbicide application to control the invasive Japanese climbing fern in pine plantations.

    Dr. Marinescu - Feasibility of wood pellet feedstock and manufacturing systems to support an energy self sufficient farm.

    Dr. Padhye - Developing production strategies to schedule flowering of new floriculture crops.

    In accepting this funding, each faculty member will publish research information as a refereed or extension publication along with developing a grant proposal for future funding.
